Introduction 2
Introduction
MegaD Spool Is to complement MegaDs print
capabilities. MegaD is a "Directory Utility," it
will create and spool print task to the printer
but it allows very little control over the task
created. MegaD Spool is a semi-smart print spool
that will try to do its best to create the desired
results as set by the "Settings" area of MegaD
Spool. It also maintains a list of pending jobs
to be printed and allows the user to manipulate or
remove those jobs.
If you are unaware of MegaD and what MegaD is or
what it could do for you:
MegaD, is without question, a unique directory
utility. It does not play by the old rules set by
the gambit of directory utilities.
The standard directory utility allows only one
source directory and one destination directory and
usually places the two available directories in
list side by side. MegaD can emulate this type of
mode if you need but this limited mode of left and
right directory windows restricts many of the
unique features of MegaD. Features such as the
ability to copy files from more than one source
directory, the ability to copy source files to
multiple destinations. The ability to copy from
multiple source to multiple destinations. The
same flexibility is given to all the commands
within MegaD, commands such as Copy As, Duplicate,
Move, Move as, Rename, Delete, Comments, Set
Protect....
This idea of not being restricted to just one or
two windows is used throughout MegaD. You are
allowed multiple text windows open at one time.
The only thing that will limit you with MegaD is
your available system memory.
So if you haven't tried MegaD, you really should.
The rest of this document will describe how to use
MegaD Spool.
Any inquires, please write:

MegaD Spool Control Window 6
v"z
MegaD Spool Windows
v"z
MegaD Spool Works from two windows, the first
window that MegaD Spool opens is the control
window and a second window is available by
selecting the "Settings..." gadget in the control
window.
v"z
Control Window
v"z
The control window has three sections of gadgets.
The top section is to control the current task
being sent to the printer. It contains the
"Current Job" display, the "Pause Print" check box
gadget and the "Stop Current Job" gadget.
The center section of gadgets gives you control
over what file you wish to print and allows you to
select, remove or modify the print jobs waiting to
go to the printer. It contains the "Pending Jobs"
list, the "Remove Selected Job" gadget, the
"Remove All" Jobs Gadgets, the "Add Job" gadget
and the "Modify Job" gadget.
The lower section of the window contains a few
major control gadgets that let you define how
MegaD Spool prints files, iconifies the program
and quits the program. It contains the gadgets
"Settings...", "Iconify", and "Quit"
v"z
Application Window
v"z
The Control Window is a "Workbench Application
Window" while it is on the Workbench screen. This
means that you may pick up icons from the
Workbench windows and drop then onto the MegaD
Spool window. This will give you the same results
as using the "Add Job..." gadget and selecting
that file from the file requestor.
v"z
Current Job
v"z
This is a text area. It displays the current
print job going to the printer. It displays only
the file name of the job not the path of the file.
If there is not a current job the area will be
blank.
v"z
Pause Print
v"z
This is a check box gadget. While this gadget is
checked, MegaD Spool will not send information to
the printer. Do not expect the printer to stop
MegaD Spool 1.2 © Copyright 1993 John L. Jones
MegaD Spool Control Window 7
just because you have checked this box. Most
printers have a buffer that stores the text being
sent to the printer. The printer will not stop
until the information in the buffer gets printed.
This gadget toggles by pressing the Escape key or
pressing the 'P' key on the keyboard. If you
check this gadget before adding a job, the job
will be held until you uncheck the gadget. This
is convenient for modifying and setting different
settings for each job. This will be explained
more during the explanation of the "Modify Job"
gadget.
v"z
Add Job
v"z
This gadget will open a file requestor so that you
may select the file you wish to send to the
printer. If you should select a file it will
first be added to the job list and then if there
are no current jobs and the "Pause Print" gadget
is not checked, that job will be send to the
printer. The file requestor is the standard ASL
file requestor so you should be familiar with its
workings.
v"z
Remove All Jobs
v"z
This gadget is ghosted when there are not any jobs
pending in the job list. Once a job is in the
list it will become unghosted and you may use it.
It will remove all jobs in the job list and it
will check to see if you want to cancel the
current job going to the printer. Before it takes
each step it will open a system requestor asking
if you are sure that you want to do this.
v"z
Remove Selected Job
v"z
This gadget will be ghosted if there is not a
selected job in the list. At the bottom of the
"Pending Jobs" is a display area the will be blank
or it will display a selected job from the list.
If there is a job being displayed in this area you
may remove this job by selecting the "Remove
Selected Job". You will not be warned that you
are removing the job as you were with "Remove All
Jobs".
v"z
Modify Job
v"z
This gadget will be ghosted if there is not a
selected job in the pending job list. If there is
a selected job you will be able to modify the
specifications for that job only. This will not
affect the other jobs in the list or the current

settings of MegaD Spool. MegaD Spool will open
the Settings window to allow you to modify each
aspect of the print job. The settings area will
be explained latter on in the section describing
the "Settings Window".
MegaD Spool 1.2 © Copyright 1993 John L. Jones
MegaD Spool Control Window 9
v"z
Iconify
v"z
By selecting this gadget MegaD Spool will close
the control window and place a small icon on the
Workbench. This is called an "Application Icon"
and will let you drop file icons from the
Workbench window onto this icon. The step of
dropping a file icon onto MegaD Spool application
icon is the same as adding a job with the "Add
Job" gadget. While MegaD Spool is iconified there
is no way to pause the job from going to the
printer. If Pause Print was checked before you
selected "Iconify", the job will be no longer be
paused and sent to the printer.
v"z
MegaD Spool Settings
v"z
This will open a window with several gadgets to
let you set the default settings of MegaD Spool.
This is explained in the next section.

v"z
MegaD Spool Settings
v"z
Once the Settings window is opened by the
"Settings" gadget from the control window the
MegaD Spool Settings window will open. This
window is divided into a few sections. All
attributes here specify just how MegaD Spool
handles print jobs.
The settings done here work with your preference's
settings that were set by the printer preferences
of the Workbench. This is important to remember
strange things may happen if some of the settings
conflict with MegaD Spool settings. A couple of
examples of these types of conflicts:
If you set your Workbench Printer Preferences to
Elite pitch the "Normal Pitch" setting of MegaD
Spool will be Elite.
If your Page Width is greater than the page width
as set by your Workbench Printer Preferences you
will get unwanted print wraps from oversize lines.
You can calculate your Workbench Printer
Preferences page width with this formula,
Right Margin - Left Margin = Page Width
I set my Workbench Printer Preferences Right
Margin to 80 and my Left Margin to 0. This allows
a full 80 character page width. (80 - 0 = 80)
If strange things are happening and you cannot
figure out what is going on, check out your
Workbench Printer Preferences to see if the
problems may be due to conflicting settings.
v"z
Pitch settings
v"z
The pitch settings is a set of "Radio" type
buttons. You press on one and the others in the
set pop out. You are given four choices for you
print pitch. They are:
Normal (10 characters per inch)
Elite (12 characters per inch)
Condensed (15-17 characters per inch)
NLQ (10 characters per inch)
By selecting a smaller pitch, such as Elite, you
are able to print 96 characters across a page
instead of only 80 characters, this is good to
know so that you can change the "Page Width"
settings.
MegaD Spool 1.2 © Copyright 1993 John L. Jones
MegaD Spool Settings 11
v"z
Line spacing
v"z
This is another set of radio control buttons. You
are able to select from one of two settings.
1/6" Lines (6 lines per inch)
1/8" Lines (8 lines per inch)
With this we can change how many lines of text
will fit on one page. If you are using standard
11" long paper you will be able to get 66 lines
per page by using "1/6" Lines" settings or you
could get 88 lines on a page by using "1/8" Lines"
settings.
v"z
Page Width
v"z
This is an integer input gadget. It will allow
you to enter a numeric value. This value should
represent the total width of the paper you will be
printing to as computed by the pitch selection.
As an example of this, should you have selected
Elite as a pitch, you should change the value in
this string gadget to 96.
v"z
Left Margin
v"z
This is the column that you want your text to
start on.
v"z
Right Margin
v"z
This is the number of columns from the right side
of your page width settings that you want to end
the line. The text will word wrap to the next
line if it exceeds the left margin.
v"z
Binding Width
v"z
This is a special setting that is intended to help
you print your document with enough of a left
margin that you can place the printed paper into a
binder without worrying about punching holes
through the text. There are some special
considerations on how the binding width is added
to the first of the printed line. This will be
covered during the "Mode" description.
v"z
Calculating Text Width
v"z
The formula for calculating text width (the
maximum width of one line of text) is:
Page Width - Left Margin - Right Margin -
Binding Width = Printed Text Width.
v"z
Tab Width
v"z
This is the width that each tab is worth as

spaces. A standard printed tab is 8 characters
wide but you may adjust this to your liking. This
is ignored on 'Pass Through Mode'.
v"z
Page Length
v"z
This is the number of lines that will fit on one
printed page.
v"z
Top Margin
v"z
This is the number of blank lines to print before
the first line of text is printed.
v"z
Bottom Margin
v"z
This is the number of blank lines to print before
the end of the page.
v"z
Print Path
v"z
This is a cycle gadget that has Three settings,
"No Path", "In Heading" and "In Footer". If "In
Heading" or "In Footer" is selected, the path and
file name will be printed on each page. This line
is printed just after the top margin or just
before the bottom margin. One more blank line
will be printed to separate the printed path from
the text of the document.
v"z
Print Page Number
v"z
This is a cycle gadget that has seven possible
settings, "No Number", "LH Top", "Center Top", "RH
Top", "LH Bottom", "Center Bottom", and "RH
Bottom". All settings except for "No Number" will
place a page number on the printed page. RH
refers to Right Hand and LH refers to Left Hand.
The format of the number is "Page #".
v"z
Mode
v"z
This is a cycle gadget that can be set to three
different settings. Pass Through, Smart, and
Reformat. Each mode has its own individuality and
will be discussed as its own subject.
v"z
Mode, Pass Through
v"z
This is the simplest of the three modes. It
ignores the settings attributes. It will send the
file straight to the printer without any
modifications. What is in the file will be sent
to the printer. This is a good time to bring up a
special point. Just because the spooler sent it
does not mean that the printer received it. The
Amiga printer driver determines what the printer
MegaD Spool 1.2 © Copyright 1993 John L. Jones
MegaD Spool Settings 13
gets. It is designed to translate a file to the
selected printer. It is one of the attractive
things about the Amiga computer system. Should
strange characters show up in your document, it
might be due the file not being compatible with
the Amiga standard print commands.
v"z
Mode, Reformat
v"z
The Reformat mode does just that. It will remove
the extra spaces, tabs, line feeds, form feeds and
any escape sequences. It will then start to
reformat the document to the current settings.
This works fine for some jobs but it will totally
botch up other jobs. The jobs that it will botch
up are jobs that the original document file
contains its own headings, footers, page numbers
and indented paragraphs. If the original document
has formatted tables of nicely formatted rows and
columns, they will not be in that format once the
it is reformatted. What happens to this
information is it will become embedded into the
regular flow of the paragraphs of the document.
v"z
Mode, Smart
v"z
This mode
v"z
TRIES
v"z to be smart. Notice the heavy
emphasis on tries. MegaD Spool will look for
command formatted attributes in the document to be
printed. MegaD Spool displays these attributes
with each job once the job is added to MegaD
Spool. The attributes are displayed with the file
name on the right edge of the list. The
attributes are displayed as capital letters. Each
letter represents a file attribute. This is what
the letters mean:
A
This file consists of ASCII printable
characters. This means that the file
contains characters that can be sent to
the printer as they are and no special
conversion done. If the file contains
other than ASCII characters the file
will be considered a HEX file and
printed that way, HEX will be explained
in the H attribute section.
F
This file has lines Formatted within the
standard 80 character line. Should your
"Page Width" setting be greater than 80,
MegaD Spool will use the greater number
MegaD Spool 1.2 © Copyright 1993 John L. Jones
MegaD Spool Settings 14
as the gauge to tell if the lines are
formatted to that width. If the lines
are formatted, MegaD Spool will not
modify the line. It will not change the
left margin to match the "Left Margin"
settings. Should you want to move the
left margin further to the right of the
printed page, uses the "Binding Width"
setting to do so.
Using "Binding Width" on a formatted
line can cause some trouble. If you are
working with an 80 column printer line
and the formatted line is 75 characters
long and the you add a 10 character
binding width, you will end up with an
85 character line. This 85 character
line will force an unwanted line on the
printed page. MegaD Spool will not know
of this extra line and place the top and
bottom margins one line further down the
page. Each time this happens the page
breaks will be placed further and
further out of sink with the
perforations of the printed paper. If
this is a problem, use a smaller pitch
to let the binding width and the
formatted line work.
Note: Setting the pitch to Elite or
Condensed and changing the page width
accordingly is useful for printing C
source code that usually has longer than
normal lines in the code. As long as
the lines in the source code are shorter
than the "Page Width" setting MegaD
Spool will not reformat the printed
lines. It will just add page breaks,
headers and footers if required.
P
The P attribute stands for Page Breaks.
MegaD Spool has found form feeds
characters in the document.
FP
If MegaD Spool finds both (F) formatted
lines and (P) page breaks it will come
to the conclusion that this is a fully
formatted document and should not try to
do any reformatting or page breaks. It
MegaD Spool 1.2 © Copyright 1993 John L. Jones
MegaD Spool Settings 15
will send each line to the printer as it
was found in the file. It will however
respect the "Binding Width" setting. If
you set the "Binding Width" to anything
other than 0 please refer to the short
discussion earlier about binding width
and formatted lines.
If the lines are not (F) formatted yet
the (P) page breaks are present. MegaD
Spool will format the lines to current
margins and create a new page with each
page break.
E
The E attribute stands for Escape
sequences were found within the
document. MegaD Spool comes to one quick
conclusion once it finds (E) Escape
sequences and that is, 'this is a fully
formatted document,' and will send it
straight to the printer. If you are in
"Reformat mode," MegaD Spool will remove
all escape sequences and then reformat
the document to the printer.
H
The H attribute stands for HEX or
hexadecimal. Any file that is non-ASCII
will be considered this type of file.
If the file contains this type of
information, MegaD Spool will print it
as a HEX dump. A HEX dump is very paper
consuming, it takes 1 line to print 16
characters. So unless you are sure you
want this type of a printed document,
refrain from printing not-ASCII text
files with MegaD Spool.

MegaD Spool Menu 16
v"z
MegaD Spool Menu
v"z
The MegaD Spool menu is a very simple project
menu. It contains options for loading or saving
setting files and quitting MegaD Spool.
v"z
Project, Open...
v"z
This will let you load a pre-saved setting file by
the standard Amiga file requestor. The setting
file contains all setting attributes that were set
at the time the setting file was saved. When
MegaD Spool is first started it looks for the
default setting file "mdSpool.spl" and if it finds
it will load and use this setting file information
to set the setting attributes.
v"z
Project, Save
v"z
This will save the current settings to the last
loaded setting file. If during this run, you have
not loaded or saved a setting file, the file will
be saved as the default "mdSpool.spl". If you
have changed the current settings, MegaD Spool
will save it as that file. It will always notify
you if you are going to delete a previous saved
file with a requestor and give you the option to
cancel that save.
v"z
Project, Save As...
v"z
This will allow you to save the current settings
to any file name you wish by using the standard
Amiga file requestor. You should always append the
".spl" extension to the end of the file name.
This way you will always be able to find and
recognize the settings files as one of MegaD Spool
settings files. The file requestor uses the
"#?.spl" pattern matches to list the files, this
is another good argument to use the ".spl" name
extension. The settings file also save the size
and location of the file requestor, this will
allow you to re-size and move the requestor to
your liking and it will be reopened to the same
size and locations.
v"z
Project, About...
v"z
This will open a small requestor with information
about the author and the version of the program.
v"z
Project, Quit
v"z
This will quit MegaD Spool. It will warn you if
you have files printing and double check to see if
you want to Quit. If there are no print jobs at
the moment it will quit without any requestor.

v"z
MegaD Spool supports two tool types to be added to
the MegaD Spool Workbench tool icon.
v"z
CREATEICONS=NO
v"z
This tells MegaD Spool to not to create setting
icons. The default is to create icons for the
setting files.
v"z

v"z
ARexx commands
v"z
A number of things are assumed in this document.
You are familiar with MDSpool and the functions
you wish to use within MDSpool through the ARexx
port.
You are familiar with the ARexx programing
language.
v"z
Case Sensitivity
v"z
All commands and arguments are not case sensitive.
So the call "dbug true" and "DBUG TRUE" will be
interpreted the same.
Format The descriptions of the commands and with
arguments format follow these convections.
<> Angle brackets enclose arguments are arguments
that must be provided. For instance, <filename>
means that you must enter the appropriate file
name in that position. Unless square brackets
surround the argument (see below), the argument is
required. The command will not work unless it is
specified.
[] Square brackets enclose arguments and keywords
that are optional. They will be accepted by the
command but are not required.
The following is an example:
VolPerScr [<value> <value>]
This translates to:
VolPerScr may be called without arguments, But if
arguments are supplied it requires two of them.
In this document, the ARexx command will be listed
to the far left of the text. If any arguments are
used with the command they will be listed on the
next line to the far left of the text with
command. The paragraph to the right of the
command describes the functions if it is unique to
to ARexx.
Errors Errors will set the RC code to 20.
Returns All commands that return a value, uses the result
variable.

MDSpool ARexx Port
v"z
The MDSpool ARexx port is titled MDSPOOL.1. If
other MDSPOOL.x ports are found the ARexx port
name will be incremented to the next number .1,
.2, .3...
NOTE: It is not a good idea to have more than one
program competing for access to the printer.
All the ARexx commands that do the action of a
